A hundred and twenty thousand emails a day. That, per Anthropic, is what Claude sorts in Barclays' Global Markets business.

This is the part that rarely makes headlines. Not chat, not a demo. The inbox of a bank department, where client requests come in, and a machine deciding where each one should go and whether it has everything needed to act on.

Fact

The facts: on 1 October 2026 Anthropic said British bank Barclays is expanding its strategic collaboration with the company and rolling out Claude across the bank to accelerate software development, modernise legacy systems and improve operational efficiency. Barclays expects Claude Code adoption to reach 50 percent of its developers by the end of 2026 and a majority of software engineers in 2027. The Colleague Knowledge Assistant, powered by Claude with retrieval over a knowledge base, has been live since 2025, adopted by more than 16,000 colleagues and has handled over one million searches; it helps Barclays UK employees who serve more than 20 million UK retail customers. In the Global Markets business, Claude models classify, enrich and route incoming emails, about 120,000 a day.

The developer figure is the bank's expectation, not a done deal. Half the developers by the end of the year means fewer today. How many, is not said.

The bank is not buying a model. It is buying a shorter queue in the inbox.

If you work in a regulated industry and are waiting for a big name to go first, here it is. With governance, controls and human oversight, both sides write. More interesting will be a year from now, when we see what happened to the old systems Claude is supposed to modernise.
