Cloudflare gives the agent a computer: files, git and shell without a container for everyone

Agents Week opened with empty talk. @cloudflare/computer is the first real meat - an open library that gives the agent a file system, git, and code execution. The lightweight mode carries most of the work; a real Linux container only fires up for the heavy stuff.

We were waiting for something concrete. Here it is. When Cloudflare announced Agents Week, we passed on it - just an intro, zero substance. Now the substance has arrived, and it's exactly the kind that counts.

Fact

The facts: on 3 August Cloudflare released @cloudflare/computer - an open source library (npm, GitHub), announced as an early preview. The agent gets a virtual file system stored in SQLite, git and file operations, code execution, and shell tools compatible with the AI SDK. There are two environments: lightweight isolates for the quick work, and full Linux containers (Cloudflare Containers) for the heavy work; the library decides on its own what goes where - per Cloudflare, isolates handle about 90% of tasks. The release is part of their Agents Week. The same day, the company also released Workers RPC between Python and JavaScript. Source: the Cloudflare blog, 03.08.2026.

Their thesis is right and simple: a container for every agent doesn't scale. The container is the universal reflex, but it's expensive, and most agent work is small - read a file, run a command, save the result. Do it in a lightweight environment and call up a container only when needed - the same math we see with the new models too: you pay for the full machine only when you actually need it.

Agent infrastructure is no longer an edge - it's now a commodity off the shelf. The difference is moving up the stack, to what you actually have the agent do and how you check the result. And one thing to keep in mind before you put it somewhere important: early preview means early preview. Test it small. Nothing critical on it, for now.
