"Vibe coding" is a dictionary word. Not in a chat, not in a headline, in the dictionary. The same one that corrects you on "affect" and "effect" tells you today that writing code by feel is now a thing with a definition.

Fact

The facts: on 25 September 2026 Merriam-Webster announced 1,400 new words and definitions in its online dictionary. From technology come compute as a noun (a resource tech companies increasingly want more of, in the dictionary's description), vibe coding, AGI (artificial general intelligence) and uncanny valley. From social media culture: looksmaxxing, parasocial, Rickroll, meme coin, promposal and a new digital sense of letterboxing. From food: superfood, cake pop, shishito, bao bun, chili crisp. From how we live: cuffing season, Sunday scaries, crashout, whack-a-mole, yacht rock, California sober, shapewear, neckbeard, copium, Mandela Effect and trash panda. The dictionary's criterion is demonstrated widespread use over time.

A dictionary does not invent words. It admits that people already say them. So the news is not that vibe coding is new. The news is that enough people have said it for long enough for an institution that hurries for nobody to write it down.

Look at the company it keeps. Vibe coding sits next to cake pop and yacht rock. Next to copium and Sunday scaries. The language of an industry that thinks of itself as the future is filed in one list with a dessert and a music genre. That is healthy, because it reminds you how many of our words are fashion and how many are tools.

The dictionary is a mirror. It shows you that you have been talking like this for a while.

Compute as a noun is the most interesting of the four to me. A word that meant an action became a commodity: something you count, buy and never have enough of. The dictionary records it in one dry sentence about companies that want more. The industry feels it on the invoice, every month.
