Weight is the first thing Meta talks about. By its account Quest 3 is five times heavier, and the new glasses can be worn comfortably for hours.
Meta solved this the simplest way: it moved the heavy part off your head. The glasses carry the display and sensors, and everything else is in a puck you clip to your pocket, tied to them by an optical tether.
Fact
The facts: on 23 September 2026, at its Connect 2026 conference, Meta introduced Meta VR Glasses - virtual reality glasses weighing about 100 grams, which the company says are five times lighter than Meta Quest 3. The sensors and display are in the glasses, while compute, battery and storage are in a separate module connected by an optical tether. The display is 5K on micro-OLED panels at 37 pixels per degree, with Dolby Vision and built-in Dolby Atmos audio, and the processor is Qualcomm's Snapdragon Reality Elite. The battery lasts up to three hours of continuous video. The glasses are the first VR device with IMAX Enhanced certification; from November Disney+ subscribers in select countries can watch films in 3D, and Meta promises more than 100 live sports events a year after launch. Sales start in spring 2027 at a price of 1,299.99 US dollars. At the same event Meta showed the Ray-Ban Meta Audio glasses and announced that Ray-Ban Display is expanding to the UK, Canada, France, Italy and Germany, and that the Muse agent is coming to its AI glasses in the coming months.
Cinema on your face, for whom
Meta's story is built mostly around cinema and sport, with games further back. That is a smart stage. The bet is that people will buy VR to see something they otherwise cannot: a film on a huge screen on a plane, a match from the front row.
The IMAX certification and the 3D catalogues of Disney+, Peacock, HBO Max and Paramount+ are exactly that - content that gives you a reason to put them on.
Technology reaches people when it stops weighing on their face.
The price is the other thing. $1,299.99 is a price for someone who travels a lot or watches films seriously, not for every home. And three hours of battery is enough for one film, not for a flight across the ocean.
For Europe, only the Ray-Ban Display expansion has been announced so far, in three EU countries. For the VR glasses, no markets have been announced; the price is given only in US dollars.
